The Community Data Playbook
We’re incredibly proud to release the Community Data Playbook! It includes case studies, plays, templates, and resources to help you better govern community-generated environmental data.
The Community Data Playbook is now available in English and Spanish!
Communities around the world collect and use environmental data, but often face barriers in using data to its fullest extent: technical solutions are cost-prohibitive or unsuited to social context and need; there’s heightened risk when sensitive information gets misused and there’s a lack of legal protections; complex local, regional, and federal laws and policies exist within dense legal landscapes.
To unlock the potential benefits of community-generated environmental data, we need better data governance approaches.

🔍 The Case Studies 🔍
The Community Data Playbook compiles case studies and strategies for environmental data governance. The case studies document our partnership with three communities: CHARRS in Atlanta, Georgia; CENIT - Centro de Investigaciones para la Transformación in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Self-Help Enterprises in Visalia, California.

🧩 The Plays 🧩
From the partnerships, we developed “plays,” or modular strategies and opportunities that data stewards can use to better govern their data. These 24 plays, designed for data stewards and intermediary organizations, demonstrate how networked data streams can preserve important local values while enabling timely, relevant, and trustworthy decision-making—both by and with community members.
🌱 The Resources & Templates 🌱
In addition to case studies and plays, you'll also find resource and templates you can repurpose for your own use, including:
Data Values Statement Templates,
Data Co-Ownership Resources,
Data Use and Sharing Agreement Questions,
Values-Oriented Read Mes, and
Privacy Policy Templates.
